mp5016h C 2.7 - 22v , 0.7 - 5a, programm able, current - limite d switch mp 5016h rev. 1.0 www.monolithicpower.com 11 5/25/2017 mps proprietary information. patent protected . unauthorized photocopy and duplication prohibited. ? 2017 mps. all r ights reserved. operation the mp 5016h is de signed to limit the in rush current to the load when a circuit card is insert ed into a live backplane power source, thereby limiting the backplanes voltage drop and the d v /dt of the voltage to the load . the mp5016h offers an integrated solu tion that monitor s the input voltage, output voltage, output current, and die temperature , which eliminates the requirement of an external current sense power resistor, power mosfet , and thermal sense device. under - voltage lockout (uvlo) the mp 5016h ca n be used in a 2. 7 v to 22v input supply system. there are high - energy transients during normal operation or hot swap s . these transients depend on the parasitic inductance and resistance of the wire and the capacitor at t he vcc node. if a power clamp (tvs, tranzorb) diode is not used, the e - fuse must be able to withstand this transient voltage. the mp 5016h integrates a high - voltage mosfet with up to 22v of continuous voltage and 26 v of maximum transient input voltage. the mp5016h also uses a high - voltage circuit for the vcc node to guarantee safe operation. mode mode is used to select the output over - voltage protection ( ovp ) threshold. three digital inputs are provided for mode . drive mode high to vcc to set the output ovp clamp voltage at 15.2 v. drive mode low to gnd to set the output ovp clamp voltage at 5.75 v. float mode for no ovp clamp protection. the ovp threshold can also be set by con necting a resistor from mode to ground. for more detail s , refer to the application information section on page 13 . soft start (ss) the soft - start time is related to the dv /dt slew rate and input voltage and can be calculated with equation (1 ): (1) the dv /dt slew rate is controlled by an external dv/dt capacitor setting and the mode setting. fast output and input ovp to protect the downstream load when there is a surge voltage at the input, the mp 5016h provides an output ovp function. an accurate and fast comparator monitor s the over - voltage condition of the output. if the output voltage rises above the thresh old set by mode , the gate of the internal mosfets is pulled down quickly and is regulated to a certain value to keep the output voltage clamped at the ovp threshold. the fast loop response speed keeps the over - voltage ov ershoot small. current limit (ilimit) the mp 5016h provides a constant current limit , and the current limit can be programmed by an external resistor. t he desired cu rrent limit i s a function of the external current limit resistor and can be approximated with equation (2) : (2) where 3 870 is the current sense ratio . once the current limit threshold is reached, the internal circuit regulate s the gate voltage to hold the current in the power mos fet constant . to limit the cur rent, the gate to the source voltage must be regulated from 5v to around 1v. the typical response time is about 15 s . during this period , the output current may have a small overshoot. if the current limit condition lasts longer than 2m s , the ic enters hiccup mode with 2ms of on time and 700ms of off time. the mp 5016h allows ilimit to be float ed during operation. if ilimit is floating, the current limit is set a t a fixed 2.5 a internally. when short ing ilimit to gnd, the normal current limit is disabled , but the secondary current limit still works. the secondary current lim it is set to 8 a internally . when the secondary current limit is tri gg e re d , the ic shut s down the power mosfet. mp5016h C 2.7 - 22v , 0.7 - 5a, programm able, current - limite d switch mp 5016h rev. 1.0 www.monolithicpower.com 12 5/25/2017 mps proprietary information. patent protected . unauthorized photocopy and duplication prohibited. ? 2017 mps. all r ights reserved. short - circuit protection (scp) if the load current increases rapidly due to a short - circuit event, the current may exceed the current - limit threshold before the control loop can respond. if the current reaches the 8 a secondary current limit level, a fast turn - off circuit activ ates to turn off the power mos fet . this can help limit the peak current through the switch, keep ing the input voltage fr om drop ping too much. the total short - circuit response time is about 1 s . after the mos fet has switched off, the part restart s . during the restart process, if the short still exist s , the mp 5016h regulate s the gate voltage to hold the current at a normal current limit level. t he ic enters hiccup mode with 2ms of on time and 700ms of off time. to prevent safe operating area ( soa ) damage during a high input voltage short - circuit protection ( scp ) condition, the ic current limit fold s back wh en the power mos fet v ds voltage is above the typical 11v and the junction temperature is over 110 c. to avoid large input voltage spike s from damag ing the ic during scp entry, it is recommend ed to use a 22 f minimum input capacitor when v in is higher than 15v. if the input surge voltage is higher than the 26v absolute voltage , the ic may be damaged . reverse - blocking mos fet driver the mp 5016h has a gate pin to provide an exte rnal n - channel mosfet gate drive signal for reverse - current protection (rcp) . three events can pull down the gate voltage : v in below the under - voltage lockout ( uvlo ) , the enable (en) voltage below the low level threshold , or thermal s hutdown. if any of these condition s occur , gate sink s the current from the gate of the external mosfet to initiate a fast turn - off. for 3.3v low input voltage application s , choose an external reverse - blocking mosfet wi th a small gate threshold voltage (v gsth < 1.6v) to reduce the voltage drop caused by the reverse - blocking mosfet. set ting an appropriate ovp threshold can also protect the reverse voltage (from the output to the input) when using an external n - chann el mosfet . when v out rises too high during normal operation, the mp 5016h source voltage is higher than the ovp threshold. in this c ase, the gate voltage is regulated to maintain the source clamped at the ovp thresho ld. this action protect s the reverse current from the high v out to the low v in . a 100pf capacitor is required on gate if it is not connect ed to the external mosfet. output discharge the mp5016h involves a discharge func tion that provides a resistive discharge path for the external output capacitor. the function is active when the part is disabled ( v in uvlo, en shutdown ) and is done in a very limited amount of time. when using the external reverse - current block mosfet, the output discharge path is block ed by the reverse current block mosfet. therefore, the output cannot be discharged when the reverse - current block mosfet is used . e nable (en) the mp5016h is ena bled when en is high . the mp5016h is disable d when en is low. floating en shuts down the mp5016h because there is an internal 2 .2 m? resistor pull ing en down to ground. for auto matic start - up, connect a pull - up resistor from vcc to en. en is clamped internally using a 5.5 v zener diode (see figure 2). connecting the en input through a pull - up resistor to v cc limits the en input curre nt below 100a to prevent damage to the zener diode. for example, when connect ing a 3 00k pull - up resistor to 22v v cc , i zener = ( 22v - 5.5 v) / 300k - 5.5v / 2.2m = 53 a. figure 2: zener diode between en and g nd when u sing a pull - up resistor to set the power - on threshold, avoid using a pull - up resistor that is too small to increase the operation al quiescent current. e n l o g i c 2 . 2 m e n g n d 1 k 5 . 5 v
